Tropical Storm Ida

I do not generally expect to be writing about a Tropical Storm threatening the Gulf Coast of Florida this late in the hurricane season. The fact that I am just goes to show how unpredictable the Atlantic hurricane season can be.

Here at Perfect Neighbors we are currently monitoring Tropical Storm Ida which is forecast to enter the Gulf of Mexico in the next few days.

At this time, track data is uncertain and the whole of the Florida Penninsula is in the five day cone of uncertainty. The strength forecast also cotinues to fluctuate but at this time we expect Ida to be an extra tropical storm (only having some of the characteristics of a tropical storm) with heavy rain and strong winds.

We do not anticipate having to implement our hurricane process for this storm but we will continue to monitor the situation and update you as necessary.

Hurricane Season Hots Up

The North Atlantic Hurricane season has gone from quiet to really busy in just 48 hours. We have been keeping an eye on the tropical season since it started, frankly with little to report. Now, suddenly we are closely monitoring three systems for potential threats to our service area and client homes.

Firstly, tropical storm Ana. This storm has been in the Atlantic for some time as Tropical Depression 2. It went away, then regenerated and strengthened. The forecast track data for Ana continues to move South and currently shows Ana in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico late next week at Tropical Depression (winds less than 35 mph) strength.

Ana is currently the biggest threat to our area and we'll continue to monitor it very closely here at Perfect Neighbors.

Secondly, Tropical Storm Bill. This storm, which is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane is currently well out in the Atlantic. The forecast models suggest that Bill may recurve back into the Atlantic without making landfall in the USA but that is highly speculative at this time. We will continue to monitor Bill and update you as necessary.

Finally, TD 4, has formed in the Gulf of Mexico this morning about 80 miles west of Tampa. It is predicted to make landfall in the panhandle area and is unlikely to present a threat to the Sarasota / Bradenton area.

We will continue to monitor the tropical weather situation closely here at Perfect Neighbors and will bring you updates as necessary. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at mark@perfectneighbors.com.

Update to Invest 93L for Sunday

According to the 2pm EDT Tropical Weather Outlook, the likelihood of the area of disturbed weather near the Yucatan Peninsula developing into a Tropical Depression has decreased and the National Hurricane Center now gives this storm a LOW (less than 30% chance) of developing into a storm.

The track data for the storm has also moved further West and at this time shows a lower risk of impacting the area.

We will post another update on Invest 93L tomorrow.

The First Tropical Storm of 2009?

This weekend, we are closely watching an area of disturbed weather east of the Yucatan Peninsula that has been designated as Invest 93L by the National Hurricane Center.

Invest 93L is due to make landfall over the peninsula sometime today and at this time it is not clear if it will survive its journey across the landmass.

If it does hold together and emerges into the Gulf of Mexico, conditions for it to develop are currently good and the National Hurricane Center is currently giving Invest 93L a 30% to 50% chance of developing into a Tropical system. The Hurricane Hunters are scheduled to investigate Invest93L tomorrow if necessary.

Rob Carver, R&D Scientist for Wunderground.com says that if Invest 93L survives the intesity models suggest that it will make landfall somewhere along the Gulf Coast of Florida as a strong Tropical Storm or weak Cat 1 hurricane.

Here at Perfect Neighbors, we will be monitoring this area of weather closely over the weekend and will post regular updates to the blog.
